You don’t need to dish out hundreds, sometimes thousands, on styled shoots to let your creativity work.

Are they fun? Yes! Can you create amazing photos? Oh my goodness yes. I’ll probably do some in the near future.

But as creatives, do we limit ourselves to location and vendors to determine whether or not we can execute beautiful photography?

That’s what I decided to find out. I worked with a couple of vendors, a couple, and my parents’ backyard (yes you read that right) and started shooting. Speaking of parents, my artist mom put together the backdrop. #mostsupportivemomaward

I was nervous. I almost thought I couldn’t make it look good enough.

But, it stretched me. It made me think differently. And, the photos were magical and luxurious. All in a residential backyard.

But, here’s some of the final product. You decide.

I’ve been trying to shoot differently this year.

I’m coming up on 13 years of doing this, and it’s easy to get into a routine. For the record, my routine shooting style looks good, but I wanted to challenge myself to guide and capture people as they are. Slow down my own shooting anxiety and be in the moment.

After all, it starts in the mind.

I used to do self portraits back in COVID days. Haven’t done a ton of it since. Life and work got in the way, but as I feel my energy returning and taste for creativity coming back, I decided to get some practice in.

There’s something about a soft Mona Lisa style smile and classic portraiture that always hits the spot.

There was once a time when I took pictures without giving a second thought to how it would “perform” on Instagram.

Now it overtakes my thought process.

Maybe it’s time to change that.

Broke out my vintage long lens and strobe for some moody portraits.

“Portrait” has become a slightly dirty word because it can (not always) lacks movement and candidness. I’m about movement and spontaneity as much as the next person, but what if we allow some of our images to be quiet and still?

We got so many cute action shots from this beautiful session with Emma and Parker, but I love this handful of portraits that remind me that calm, quiet, and peace in a loving relationship are meant to be cherished 🖤

As a Michigander in Charlotte for 17 years, I’ve never seen a southern snow like this.

I’m notoriously a grinch about snow. I had enough in my childhood 😅 but watching it fall and having my Tzus hopping and playing in the snow, it thawed my heart just a smidge.

The snow melts, and we get back to normal life. It was fun while it lasted 🖤
